SciBlogs NFL Challenge

The NFL preseason starts this Sunday. I'm not kidding, you can look it up. That means that we are little more than a month from the NFL regular season, which also means this summer has flown by way too quickly. However, rather than focus on the pending doom that the school year brings, I am inviting my fellow bloggers to join in an NFL pickem' pool. For those who have not been involved in something like this before, the rules are simple - pick which team will win each game. To make it a bit more complicated, we will be picking which team will when when the spread is taken into account, but the idea remains the same - if you give the team expected to lose an XX point handicap, who will win the game? The weekly results will be posted here on Tuesdays during the regular season and we will come up with some way to recognize both the overall and weekly leaders (like the Tour de' France... but different).

Now, in order to keep the numbers reasonable and to facilitate the shit-talking, let's start by limiting the participants to those with running blogs. If this motivates a couple of regular commenters to start up a place of their own, great. You've got a month. So, I've started a yahoo group for people to login and enter their picks. Email me (proflikesubstance at the gmail) for the login info and let the shenanigans begin.

  4. Sweet. I really don't follow NFL, so I'll be picking based on "Who do I know in that city? Do I like them?" If so, that team is my winner. Unless of course they have a really lame mascot.

I've had fantastic luck with this strategy in the NCAA basketball playoffs. Look out!

  5. You're also allowed to have more than 1 email address and to create ones for the sole purpose of a football pool. You can leave it by the side of the internet highway to rot once you are done.

  6. This sounds so fun but I'm not a football person. So will have to settle for reading y'alls posts on the matter...

    Go teams!

  7. Ink, you don't have to be a "football person" (which sounds like a mutant oompa loompa, BTW) to play. Did you read AA's comment? It's not really rocket science.

  8. My only hope would be if I followed the approach used by Diane from Cheers, and decided picks based on which mascot would win in a fight. I think there was some kerfuffle about whether a dolphin might be able to beat a bear, and they decided that since the game takes place on land, so would the fight, hence the dolphin would lose.

That was a very convoluted way of saying "I'm sorry but I don't follow this sport you call "foot"ball, but I will follow your banter with interest in case anyone is interested in doing something similar for the NHL". Oh, and I'll be running a World Cup FOOTball pool next summer, after the hilarity that ensued during Euro 2008! Ooooh, and another Olympics pool too. Always interesting to see the different ways of running sports pools!

  9. Cath> you know I am up or the NHL challenge any time ;)

PLS> yeah yeah, I guess you are correct in that assumption. I should just make a cool email addy... like... ehh... I'm sure I'll think of something :)

  10. I did read what AA said, and that's awesome (also liking Cath's Cheers idea). But I suffer from this weird affliction whereupon someone starts talking about "point spreads" and other sporty things and my mind wanders. Can I be a cheerleader, though? You know, with herkies and stuff? Think I might have my old uniform somewhere...

  11. Ink, I hope you have a uniform with "Teams" across the front and a generic mascot that might be a bird or cat of some sort.

  12. Kay, I'll get one. And the mascot will be a transformer (from the beast wars series), how about, to accommodate various teamage!
